Sampoorn Singh Kalra “Gulzar” is an Indian lyricist, poet, screenwriter, & film director. Gulzar has also been awarded many famous awards for Hindi cinema. He has also been awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s highest Padma honor in 2004. He was awarded the Oscar for Best Song for the song “Jai Ho” in the Slumdog Millionaire directed by Danny Boyle. He has also been awarded the Grammy Award for this song.

Sampoorn Singh Kalra alias Gulzar was born on 18 August 1936 in Dina, Jhelum District, Punjab, British India, which is now in Pakistan. Gulzar is the only child of his father’s second wife. His father’s name was Makhan Singh Kalra and his mother’s name was Sujan Kaur.
When Gulzar was very innocent and small, then his mother died. During the partition of the country, his family settled in Amritsar, Punjab. While there Gulzar saheb came to Mumbai. After coming to Mumbai, he started working as a mechanic in a garage. He started writing poems in his free time as an amateur. He then quit his garage job and worked as an assistant to famous Hindi cinema directors Bimal Rai, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, and Hemant Kumar.
Gulzar is married to divorced actress Rakhi Gulzar. However, the couple separated after their daughter was born. But Gulzar saheb and Rakhi never divorced from each other. He has a daughter – Meghna Gulzar who is a film director.
Gulzar’s career in Hindi cinema began with songwriter SD Burman’s film Bandhini. In 1968, he wrote dialogue for the film Ashirwad. Ashok Kumar was seen in this film. Ashok Kumar also received the Filmfare Best Actor Award for this film. After this, he wrote the lyrics of many great films, for which he always received praise from critics and audiences.
In 2007, he wrote the song Jai Ho for the Hollywood film Slumdog Millionaire. He was also awarded the Grammy Award for this film.
He has also contributed a lot to Hindi cinema as a director. He has given many excellent films to the audience under his direction, which the audience still loves to watch.
Apart from the big screen, he has written a lot for small screen as well. Which includes Doordarshan’s show Jungle Book.
